EU Debate Club "Will Turkey join the EU?" was held on 21 November, 2018
On 21 November 2018, EU Debate Student Club was held in Room 503 of Academia Hall for
Social Sciences at Rokkodai campus of Kobe University.
Associate Professor Kivilcim Erkan (Faculty of Law) first briefly explained the EU accession
process and the main reasons why Turkey cannot yet join the EU. 6 debate participants became
familiar with both the EU's official position and public opinion on Turkey's membership.
Participating students then described how Turkey has been portrayed by media in their home
countries and discussed the importance of the EU-Turkey refugee deal. Participants were interested
to know more about the pending Cyprus issue and the criteria which an EU Member must fulfill in
order to be included in the Schengen Area. Finally, participants also discussed whether the definition
of a European state is vague, considering the fact that some overseas territories of France and Spain
belong to the EU despite their distant geographical location.
