On Friday 26 June, EU Debate Student Club was held with EUIJ Kansai via Zoom teleconference system to have lively conversation on "a journey with a piece of chocolate to explore Europe and the world".
To begin with, a student explained that cacao was originally in ancient Mexico and was very precious and expensive as 'food for gods'. Cacao was grinded and mixed with spices to make the emperor's drink in Azteca. Cortez brought cacao from Mexico to Spain and changed the additives from spices to sugar in order to make a sweet version. It was then spread in Europe. Students were then invited into small breakout rooms on Zoom to talk about European colonization where cacao was brought in tropical plantations and closely look at distinctive products of chocolate made by artisanal skills in European countries. It was an excellent chance to have an imaginary journey to Europe and the world.
