On 14 June 2017, EU Debate Club was held in Common Room (606) of Frontier Building at Rokkodai campus of Kobe University.
6 participants first checked some facts about the NATO's recommended target for military spending. Participants then discussed some arguments in favour of greater military spending in the EU, such as numerous security challenges faced by the EU and the need of a closer military cooperation in post-Brexit EU.
Participants also raised several arguments against greater military spending in the EU, namely the worsened budget conditions of many EU countries and the need to prioritise education and healthcare.
At the end participants concluded that an increased defence spending is advisable, but that the EU might need to set its own target of defence spending, which would be in line with the Member States' security priorities.

EU Debate Club is designed to familiarise students with the variety of opinions on the EU-related topics and we will continue to select important and relevant debate topics.
