Mini Symposium for Kobe University Secondary School was held on 12 July, 2017

On Wednesday 12 July 2017, Kobe University's Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence organised a Mini Symposium at Kobe University Secondary School. The event, which was attended by more than 70 students, consisted of two lectures. After the opening speech by Mr. Motoaki KATSUYAMA, the School's Vice-principal, Professor Kazunari SAKAI (Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University) delivered a lecture entitled "Migration Issues in the EU: Policy Harmonisation and Quest for Security", in which he explained the EU's response to the ongoing refugee crisis.
In the second lecture entitled "The Prewar Japanese Immigration Issue and the Present Refugee Problem in Europe: Is Assimilation Possible?" Professor Toshihiro Minohara (Graduate School of Law, Kobe University) looked into the history of the anti-Japanese movement in the United States and drew some implications for the immigration policies of the EU and Japan as well as the increasingly important role of young generations.
Both lectures kept the student audience engaged and even after the Q&A session finished, some students came to the speakers to ask more questions. The Mini Symposium was clearly very successful.
Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of Kobe University will regularly organise mini symposia for high school students.
